Here is my concern.
Hardie board over vinyl flooring.
The backer board is only as secure as the vinyl below it so make sure the vinyl is laid down tightly.
I have since decided to install vinyl sheet flooring.
Position cement backer board.
Use a notched trowel to apply thin set adhesive to the vinyl flooring.
I d like to lay down 1 4 hardibacker and then.
Screw down any loose area into the subfloor with 3 4 inch drywall screws.
For best results remove existing floor covering especially if it is in poor condition.

Attach the backer board to the floor using self countersinking screws such as backer on screws available at the home depot.
To smooth the floor i covered screw.
Apply adhesive to floor.
Current flooring surface is 3 4 plywood subfloor one layer of lino over that and then a layer of 12 12 lino tiles over that.
Hardiebacker cement board may be installed under or over vinyl composition tile vct and other resilient flooring.

The problem isn t with the mortar sticking to the vinyl it is what is under the vinyl and how well it is stuck down.
The lino tiles are in pretty good shape none popping loose.
Most of the vinyl flooring i have seen done up here is over particle board.
3 lay out the backer.
Good luck installing tile over that.
